Major Responsibilities:
- Responsible for organizing, planning, and directing the clinical and administrative operations within Surgical Services in accordance with Advocate vision and mission.
- Serves the on-call administrative function for the department 24/7.
- Initiates all Apparent Cause Analysis meetings and facilitates multi-disciplinary review for patient safety and evidence based practice guidelines.
- Directs the establishment of initiatives and strategies consistent in support of the overall Advocate, Hospital and Operations goals and objectives.
- Collaborates with other members of the health care team to ensure that an environment of minimal risk to the patient exists.
- Communicates issues and concerns directly with Director and other department leaders in order to resolve safety concerns in a timely manner.
- Responsible for the continued quality improvement of existing patient and supportive health care services to provide quality patient care.
- Assures that new clinical and operational knowledge and research in the health care field is incorporated into the delivery of patient care.
- Monitors productivity levels to ensure proper utilization of staff and resources. Ensures appropriate allocation of equipment, inventory, supplies, etc.
- Responsible for budget management and performance and fiscal oversight of all areas of responsibility.
- Develops annual operating budgets (revenue, expense, activity and FTEs budgeted and actual).
- Develops capital budgets (maintenance and strategic capital).
- Monitors budgets, investigates and reports on any reasons for variances.
- Achieves established performance within organizational expectations.
- Ensures that all departmental expenses are processed appropriately, timely, and according to Advocate’s financial control policy and corporate compliance guidelines.
- Appropriately manages budgeted vs. actual FTEs, open requisitions and profile processing, performance reviews within policy guidelines of 30 days or less.
- Responsible for Key Results Area, (KRA's) and ensure outcomes are within established targets.
- Plans, develops and implements the operational, capital and space planning process by meeting established Advocate Condell goals.
- Monitors and assesses progress toward budgetary goals and guides the Coordinators and Team leaders through this process.
- Provides first level of approval for use of funds based on cost studies or review of department budget performance and projections. Selects, directs and develops staff that will ensure the effective utilization of human resources maintaining quality of care in the attainment of hospital objectives.
- Development and direction of the performance of areas of responsibility in compliance with the standards required by Advocate Health Care, accreditation agencies and clinical practice.
- Develops and implements policies, procedures and standards which follow quality management, Accrediting Organization, DNV, IDPH, CDC, OSHA and other guidelines.
- Monitors changes in accrediting and governmental standards and makes changes in policies and procedures as appropriate.
- Participates on various operating and planning committees to ensure compliance with accrediting and regulatory bodies.
- Assures AORN Standards and ASPAN, are adhered to within the surgical arena/GI suites.
- Assures appropriate corrective action plan is adhered to for associate performance.
- Participate in Advocate Condell strategic planning and business development initiatives.
- Provide vision, metrics, and operational results to senior leadership for the purpose of organizational improvement and growth.
- Create physician alignment tools and growth potentials with regional Advocate business development leaders.
- Participate in community and regional political forums in support of organizational and health care related issues.
- Participates as a member of the Advocate Condell OR/Surgical Steering Committee
- Participates and attends Peri-Anesthesia system wide council.
- Participates and attends GI system wide council.
- Evaluation of existing programs and services or development of new programs and services, in conjunction with the medical staff to meet the needs of identified patient populations within the mission, vision and overall strategic plan of the organization.
- Cultivates relationships with key constituencies within the internal and external communities to determine health care needs and develops partnerships to address those needs.
- Monitors and assesses the needs of the medical staff as customers of the institution as it relates to patient care.
- Analyzes information and develops and implements strategic planning in collaboration with chairmen, medical directors and others.
- Participates in community outreach events supporting Advocate Condell Medical Center.
- Develops plans for volume growth, physician alignment and external marketing awareness.
- Works in conjunction with the director to create community education initiatives.
- In conjunction with department management, directs all service line specific Team Coordinators.
- Participates in the development of staff and volunteers in the performance of their accountabilities so that optimal patient care is achieved.
- Interviews, hires and develops personnel.
- Establishes and supports an environment of continuous learning.
- Endorses wage increases, promotions, disciplinary action and termination of personnel, consistent with hospital policies and procedures.
- Ensures that a program for orientation, on-the-job training and continuing education is coordinated with other departments. Oversees college or university programs which may use the hospital’s clinical facilities.
- Utilizes organizational structure to foster teamwork and enable employees to work together toward common objectives consistent with the mission of the hospital.
- Promotes the highest moral and ethical standards by serving as a role model.
- Provides coaching, counseling and disciplinary actions as appropriate.
- Support and assist the development of the Shared Governance councils and ensures associates are engaged and participative in councils.
- Oversees all department customer service initiatives. Creates necessary action plans and ongoing measures to implement patient satisfaction practice.
- Acts as a role model for Behaviors of Excellence.
- Directs Day Surgery and Pre-admissions departments by budget/financial management, operational efficiency model implementation, vendor management, and department management support.
- Supports the Value Analysis Team (VAT) in new product, trial equipment, and new technology decision making.
- Manages all budgetary and financial revenue/expense responsibilities for surgical inventory.
- Provides leadership, guidance, and project management support for all IT/IS issues in inventory management.
Licensure:
- Nurse, Registered (RN)
Education/Experience Required:
- Graduate from an accredited school of Nursing. Bachelor's Degree in Nursing required. 5-6 years
- OR nursing experience Mgmt. experience preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
- Software package skills including Word, Excel, and cc:Mail Advanced budget development Problem solving and analytical skills Effective communication and team-building skills across departments and disciplines
- Related healthcare provider certification with advanced degree status.
