About The Role

The Appian Platform Administrator plays a critical role in supporting the firm’s Operations organization by maintaining and optimizing the Appian low-code automation platform. This individual ensures the platform’s stability, security, and performance—enabling Operations teams to streamline business processes, enhance client service, and maintain compliance across the firm’s processes.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on technical professional with a deep understanding of Appian system administration and a keen appreciation for operational efficiency, data integrity, and risk management within a regulated financial environment.

Work from our global headquarters in Milwaukee, WI four days/week with one day/week work from home flexibility.

The Impact You'll Make

Platform Administration

  • Administer and maintain multiple Appian environments (Development, UAT. SIT, and Production) to ensure stability and performance.
  • Manage application deployments, system patches, and platform upgrades in coordination with Appian and internal IT infrastructure teams.
  • Monitor platform health, performance metrics, and logs; identify and resolve bottlenecks proactively.
  • Manage user provisioning, role-based access control, and integration with enterprise authentication systems (e.g., SSO, LDAP, Active Directory).

Operational Support & Governance

  • Serve as the primary technical contact for Appian within the Operations organization.
  • Establish and enforce platform governance standards, including deployment procedures, naming conventions, and audit controls.
  • Partner with our Business Process Architect, Business Process developers, Operations process owners, and IT Security to ensure reliable delivery of automation solutions.
  • Maintain documentation of platform configuration, maintenance procedures, and recovery processes.
  • Collaborate with Appian Support and internal technology teams to manage incidents, root cause analyses, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Security, Compliance, and Risk Management

  • Implement and maintain Appian security best practices aligned with financial industry standards.
  • Ensure platform configurations and data handling adhere to internal policies, audit standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage SSL certificates, platform encryption settings, and secure integrations with enterprise systems.
  • Support audit requests and participate in control assessments or remediation efforts.

Performance and Optimization

  • Conduct capacity planning, performance tuning, and system optimization to support growth in user base and transaction volumes.
  • Monitor and analyze resource utilization and usage trends to ensure system scalability and cost efficiency.
  • Work with infrastructure teams to optimize underlying components such as databases, middleware, and storage.

Development

  • Design, build, and maintain platform‑level Appian components such as reusable objects, shared process models, interfaces, rules, constants, expression libraries, and integration frameworks that are leveraged across multiple applications. Identify and implement continuous improvement and innovation opportunities within current technologies
  • Engineer and support platform services and utilities such as common document generation, notifications, data synchronization, entitlement management, and audit/logging capabilities.
  • Proactively refactor and enhance platform components to address scalability, performance, security, and maintainability concerns as platform usage grows.

Integration and Automation

  • Support, build, and maintain integration of Appian with internal systems, data warehouses, and third-party applications via APIs and plugins.
  • Configure, build, and maintain Appian connectors, web services, and integrate objects to enable seamless data flow across platforms.
  • Build and maintain shared integrations and connected systems, including authentication patterns, error handling, logging, and resiliency mechanisms to support consistent integration usage across teams.

What You'll Bring To Baird

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related technical discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • Minimum 2 years of experience administering Appian in an enterprise environment—preferably within financial services or another regulated industry.
  • Demonstrated experience managing Appian environments in the cloud.
  • Background in Linux/Windows system administration, networking, and middleware technologies.
  • Familiarity with SQL databases and performance tuning.
  • Experience supporting technology solutions for Operations functions such as trade processing, settlements, compliance, or client onboarding is a plus.

Technical Skills

  • Strong understanding of Appian architecture, including engines, data management, and plugin management.
  • Proficiency in scripting for automation.
  • Working knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, configuration management, and version control.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with attention to detail and operational reliability.

Certifications (Preferred)

  • Appian Certified Developer.
  • Appian Senior Developer (nice to have).
  • ITIL Foundation or equivalent service management certification.
