Performs, analyzes, and reports molecular lab test results from a variety of specimens to provide clinical data which aid the physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.
Completes all aspects of molecular diagnostics including sample preparation, genetic testing, and data analysis for inherited disorders including, but not limited to, Cystic Fibrosis, Hearing Loss, DiGeorge Syndrome, Hypercoagulation, and Pharmacogenetics.
Assists in the design and performs clinical diagnostic testing utilizing molecular techniques that include, but are not limited to, nucleic acid extraction/purification, allele-specific PCR, real time PCR (qPCR), digital PCR Sanger sequencing/fragment analysis, next generation sequencing, and bioinformatics.
Performs isolations, extractions and purifications of molecular samples
Performs analytical detection and quantification of molecules utilizing, but not limited to, thermal cyclers, genetic analyzers, and real time PCR instruments.
Requirements
Requires advanced level of chemistry, biology, genetics, and mathematics, acquired through completion of a Bachelor’s degree in science. Advanced graduate degree or training in laboratory science is preferred.
One to three years experience performing molecular laboratory procedures.
Clinical laboratory experience with certification and/or eligibility as a medical technologist (clinical laboratory scientist) is preferred.
Must be able to work independently, meet deadlines, troubleshoot, and produce error‑free results.
Requires interpersonal skills to work with patients, patient’s families, physicians, hospital, and laboratory staff.
Ability to sit for extended periods of time for experimental set-up, analysis, and visually concentrate on small fields such as through microscopes.
Experience with automated nucleic acid extraction equipment, standard and real-time thermal cyclers and capillary electrophoresis equipment is preferred.
Familiarity with MS Word, MS Excel, NCBI database searches, and primer and/or plasmid design software is desirable.
Assists in the training and teaching of lesser skilled staff. Additionally, instruct students and resident/fellows as needed.
