Job Description

SUMMARY: Conducts basic and applied testing in support of the company’s activities, as directed, by performing the following duties directly, or through subordinates when so directed.

How you will do it:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Includes the following; performs other duties as directed.

  • Reads and interprets test plans, procedures, and drawings.
  • Conducts testing of fire suppression products in accordance with supplied procedures.
  • This function includes assembly of test items, acquisition/procurement of test equipment, set-up of tests, running tests, data collection, tear down of test systems, and other incidental tasks.
  • Works with data acquisition equipment to collect data. Collects and reduces operational and test data and information.
  • Works with other technicians and personnel to meet program requirements.
  • Mentor Entry Test Engineering Technicians (Level I) and assist Lead Test Engineering Technicians (Level III) with large-scale projects.
  • Conducts fire tests and demonstrations using fire protection equipment and required PPE, as well provides backup protection during fire testing.
  • Operates forklifts.
  • Performs various housekeeping duties.
  • Identifies and assists in remediation of any and all safety hazards in the work place.
  • Maintains a good safety record.
  • Performs all elements of the job in accordance with established procedures.
  • Maintains laboratory notebook of test data and related information.
  • Writes test reports to summarize and communicate results of test programs.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required (preferred NICET Certification in Special Hazards Suppression Systems).

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Associate’s degree in a technical discipline (preferred associates degree in fire protection); or one year of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and understand written instructions, e.g. safety notices and rules, test procedures, operating and maintenance instructions, etc. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Demonstrated understanding of and ability to apply all basic math functions, e.g. addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

COMPUTER SKILLS: Demonstrated ability to work within Microsoft Office applications. Ability to type preferred.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to demonstrate a good mechanical aptitude. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Ability to reason in a teamwork atmosphere. Ability to learn, change, and adapt as needed.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those which must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, and controls. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, climb stairs, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

The work environment consists of a number of lab areas and machine shop areas. While the Company makes every effort to reduce and eliminate all safety hazards, this type of environment does involve safety hazards which require extra care on the part of the employee. Such hazards include, but are not limited to: moderate to high pressure test gases and liquids in test systems; extreme high and low temperature test fluids and items; high electrical voltages; chemicals; and sharp objects, such as might be generated around machine tools. The noise in the work environment is moderate. Temperature extremes are regulated, but not as closely as typical indoor offices. PPE will be provided when necessary.

HIRING HOURLY RANGE: $23.55-31.25 (Hourly rate to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge,
skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, location and alignment with market data.) This position
