What you will do

Johnson Controls is building next‑generation IT/OT integration capabilities through our industry‑leading controls platform, with a growing focus on AI‑enabled, GPU‑based data center infrastructure. We are seeking a Data Center AI Intern at the graduate or PhD level to support the understanding, analysis, and application of performance and operational metrics from AI hardware nodes used in modern data centers.

In this role, you will contribute to efforts that connect AI compute infrastructure with building systems, controls, and operational intelligence, helping enable smarter, more efficient, and more reliable data center operations.

How you will do it

  • Analyze and interpret operational, performance, and health metrics from GPU‑based AI hardware nodes within data center environments

  • Support the integration of IT system data (AI compute, GPUs, servers) with OT systems through the Johnson Controls controls platform

  • Assist in identifying key metrics relevant to performance, energy efficiency, reliability, and uptime for AI‑driven data center workloads

  • Collaborate with cross‑functional engineering, controls, and digital teams to translate hardware‑level data into actionable insights

  • Contribute to documentation, analysis summaries, and technical insights that inform platform development and integration strategies

  • Participate in technical discussions related to AI infrastructure monitoring, telemetry, and system interoperability

What we look for

Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in or recently admitted to a graduate or PhD program at an accredited university

  • Academic focus in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, or a related technical field

  • Foundational understanding of AI workloads, GPUs, or high‑performance computing systems

  • Interest in data center infrastructure, systems integration, or industrial/controls environments

  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills

  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences

  • Legal authorization to work in the United States

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience or coursework related to GPU architectures, AI/ML infrastructure, or high‑performance computing

  • Familiarity with data center operations, monitoring, or telemetry systems

  • Exposure to IT/OT integration concepts, building management systems, or industrial controls

  • Programming or scripting experience used for data analysis, system monitoring, or automation

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently in a research‑oriented or technical environment

HIRING HOURLY RANGE

$32.00 – $33.00/hour
(Hourly rate to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, location and alignment with market data.)
