Job Overview

This is an onsite position located in Milwaukee.

The Senior Manufacturing Engineer- Gearing provides leadership and technical expertise to the gear manufacturing operations and gear inspection teams, applying engineering knowledge to optimize quality standards for gears and splines.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Provides technical assistance in Gear Manufacturing and Gear Inspection. Is versed in all the quality standards for gears and splines
  • Designs hobs, cutters and grinding wheels.
  • Understands and uses UTS Gear Engineering software for calculating sizes, creating dxf files, designing long lead tooling, plots of gear teeth and other data necessary for creating process sheets.
  • Uses solid models to create setup sheets.
  • Analyzes engineering drawings, solid models, sketches, and quality standards to determine program requirements.
  • Develops new and improved manufacturing methods (DFMA).
  • Creates and maintains NC programs for; Gear Hobbers, Gear Shapers, Gear Grinders and Gear Inspection machine tools.
  • Creates and maintains all cutting parameters on process sheets used to machine a gear.
  • Maintains a catalogue of gear hobs, cutters and grinding wheels and establishes sourcing of the tooling.
  • Identifies opportunities for process improvements and carries out improvement actions.
  • Evaluates equipment and processes to ensure capability of meeting part requirements. Leads projects to upgrade, replace, and procure new equipment. Prepares appropriation requests for capital projects.
  • Identifies opportunities to reduce cost, improve productivity, safety, quality, velocity, OTD, etc.
  • Requisitions all gear cutting tools.
  • Identifies product design drawing errors and improvement opportunities and facilitate changes through the RFPD system and other means.
  • Assists with routing operation sequence, PFMEA’s and cost estimates.
  • Develops, maintains, and documents setup sheets using Solid Works for numerically controlled machines.
  • Establishes machine speeds and feed rates and configuration of cuts using vendor software unique to each machine tool.
  • Writes manufacturing operating procedures and instruct hourly employees.
  • Participates in pre-production product design reviews and engineering efforts to ensure manufacturability of new product design.
  • Performs reverse engineer gearing.
  • Provides technical support for reworking gearing.
  • Supports maintenance by providing instructions for inspecting machine geometry and writes preventative maintenance plans.
  • Provides technical support for rebuild, upgrade, and enhancement of existing equipment, replacement of worn-out equipment, and procurement of new equipment to support manufacture of P&H products.
  • Evaluates vendor proposals and make recommendations.
  • Write CEAs, perform acceptance tests and manage new machine tool requisitions.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial) preferred. Will consider Associate’s degree or equivalent from a Technical College and Journeyman’s status OR 10 years of experience in the machine trades
  • A minimum of 10-15 years of gear manufacturing experience required
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook), UTS Software, CAD Design software
  • Good communication skills (verbal, written, presentation)
  • Ability to work with the engineering team and other manufacturing departments together cohesively.
  • Ability to multitask. Good time management/organization skills
