The Division Director of Preoperative Optimization and Consultative Anesthesiology is a novel role at the Medical College of Wisconsin. This individual leads the Preoperative Assessment and Optimization Clinic (PAOC). They are charged with further developing a data-driven, sustainable platform for preoperative assessment and optimization, including appropriate triage and collaboration with surgeons to develop processes to ensure the best possible outcomes. Efforts should align with the organizational goals of Caring, Collaboration, Respect and Curiosity.

Position Highlights:

  • Develop and execute a strategic plan consistent with Enterprise and Departmental priorities.

  • Prioritize efforts to achieve strategic goals.

  • Maintain knowledge of current literature and best practices around preoperative assessment and optimization.

  • Evaluate, and when appropriate, adopt emerging technologies with the goal of improving efficiency, outcomes, and patient experience. Examples may include e-consults, virtual visits, and AI triage tools.

  • Identify opportunities to improve assessment and optimization and develop a framework for rigorous continuous improvement.

  • Use an evidence-based approach to develop new processes and workflows to better perioperative outcomes

  • Establish a mechanism for shared decision-making between POAC staff, surgeons, patients, and families to ensure all are aware of risks, benefits, and likelihood of return to baseline functional status.

  • Seek out and facilitate opportunities to publish outcomes data.

  • Collaborate with partners in Internal Medicine

  • Facilitate communication between the POAC faculty, RNs and APPs.

  • Create a culture of teamwork within the Division of Preoperative and Consultative Anesthesiology.

  • Assist in the evaluation of preoperative patients and have oversight of optimization patients.

  • Engage in onboarding and selection of new faculty and APPs.

  • Identify and mentor future leaders for the division

  • Maintain membership in relevant professional societies (e.g. Society for Perioperative Assessment and Quality Improvement, etc.).

  • Collaborate with the residency program director and the program director for the Master of Science in Anesthesiologist Assistant program to create optimal learning experiences focused on perioperative assessment and optimization.

  • Develop a fellowship program centered on perioperative optimization and consultation.

  • Reports to the Vice Chair, Quality and Safety of the Department of Anesthesiology

Qualifications

  • MD, MD/PhD, or DO from an accredited institution with board certification in Anesthesiology

  • State medical licensure, or eligibility to obtain license, in the state of Wisconsin.

  • Additional training in management, perioperative medicine, and/or quality improvement preferred.

  • Rank will be determined by the qualifications and experience of the successful finalist.
